How to get grease stains out of clothes?

Grease stains on clothes can have several causes, including direct contact with oil or grease, or a contaminated washing machine that transfers residue onto laundry. We offer effective solutions such as HG stain away no. 2 for treating grease stains directly, as well as HG washing machine cleaner and odour freshener and HG washing machine and dishwasher deep clean and service if the issue is caused by machine contamination. Practical measures such as washing at suitable temperatures and cleaning the machine regularly can also help. Regular maintenance of the washing machine and proper storage of clothes in a clean, dry and well-ventilated space help prevent grease stains. Always check the maintenance instructions from the manufacturer beforehand.

HG solutions for removing grease stains from clothes

If your clothing has grease stains, the right HG solution depends on the cause:

  • For grease stains directly on textiles, use HG stain away no. 2. This product is specially developed for stains from oil, grease, cooking oil, frying fat, lubricating grease and similar substances. Always follow the instructions on the packaging and test first on an inconspicuous area.
  • HG washing machine cleaner and odour freshener: If your clothing suffers from grease-like stains due to a contaminated washing machine, this product cleans the entire washing machine very effectively by removing dirt deposits and detergent residue in drain pipes, filters and rubbers — common causes of marks on laundry. Fill the main detergent dispenser with 165 grams (approximately 150 ml), do not add any extra detergent and select a mixed wash cycle at 60°C without pre-wash. Allow the programme to run completely including spin. Repeat every 4 weeks or more frequently if desired. Sufficient for 3 treatments.
  • HG washing machine and dishwasher deep clean and service: This product helps prevent breakdowns and residue problems by removing limescale, soap, dirt and grease deposits from filters, floats, drain pipes and other critical components. Sealing rubbers remain elastic and water-resistant, helping to prevent leaks and short circuits. Fill the main detergent dispenser with a full bottle (100 g), do not add any extra detergent and select a mixed wash cycle at 60°C. Allow it to run completely without interruption. Use approximately once per quarter.

In addition to using these products, it is also important to maintain your washing machine regularly. Check our tips on cleaning your washing machine, removing odours and maintaining your washing machine for more information.

Solutions for removing grease stains from clothes

If your clothing is affected by grease stains, there are some practical measures you can take yourself. Although these methods are not always equally effective and sometimes carry risks, they can help in certain cases:

  • Wash the affected garments again at the highest temperature suitable for the fabric, so grease stains can come away more easily from the fibres.
  • Soak the garments in a bucket of warm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid before washing. Leave them to soak for an hour and then wash in the washing machine.
  • Clean the rubber seals and detergent dispenser of your washing machine regularly with a damp cloth to prevent build-up of dirt and detergent residue that can cause marks on your clothes.
  • Leave the washing machine door open after each wash so the drum can dry and reduce the risk of odour, mould and residue build-up.

Bear in mind that these methods may not completely remove all traces of grease stains. For persistent problems, we recommend addressing the cause directly with the correct product: use HG stain away no. 2 for grease stains on fabric, or HG washing machine cleaner and odour freshener or HG washing machine and dishwasher deep clean and service if the machine itself is causing marks.

Causes of grease stains on clothes

Grease stains on clothing are an annoying problem that can have various causes. Here are the main ones:

  • Direct contact with oil, grease, fatty foods, cooking oil or personal care products.
  • A contaminated washing machine with build-up of dirt, detergent residue and limescale in drain pipes, filters and rubbers, which means laundry no longer gets properly clean.
  • Washing at too low a temperature, which means dirt and grease stains may not be completely removed from the textile fibres.
  • Using too much detergent, which leaves residue in the machine that can deposit on your clothes as marks.
  • Leaving wet laundry in the machine after washing, which creates an ideal environment for residue and odours to develop.

To prevent grease stains in future, it is essential to treat stains promptly and maintain your washing machine regularly. Use the recommended amount of detergent, wash at the correct temperature for the type of laundry and remove clothes immediately after the wash cycle. Regular maintenance of the washing machine and proper storage of clothes in a clean, dry and well-ventilated space help prevent grease stains. Always check the maintenance instructions from the manufacturer beforehand.
