How can I best clean my patio?
For effective patio cleaning, HG offers powerful solutions such as HG patio-tile cleaner. You can also use household products like cleaning vinegar, bleach or soft soap, although these are not always equally effective or safe to use. A dirty patio can result from weather exposure, algae, moss, stains and general wear. Regular maintenance, including sweeping, scrubbing and prompt stain removal, can help keep your patio in good condition for longer.

Patio cleaning solutions using household products
If you prefer to use household items, there are several options available. These should be used carefully:
- Cleaning vinegar: Dilute with water in a 1:1 ratio and apply to the patio. Allow it to work for a few minutes before scrubbing and rinsing thoroughly with water.
- Bleach: Mix one part bleach with ten parts water. Apply to the patio, leave it to work briefly, scrub and rinse thoroughly. Take care to follow safety instructions.
- Soft soap: Mix with warm water and apply with a brush. Scrub gently and rinse well afterwards.
Whilst these methods can help, they are not always suitable for all surfaces and may cause discolouration or damage if used incorrectly. Results can vary depending on the type of patio and the level of dirt. For thorough and safe cleaning, it is advisable to use specially designed patio cleaning products according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Causes of a dirty patio
A patio can become soiled due to several factors:
- Weather exposure: Rain and wind carry dirt and debris
- Algae and moss: Develop in damp and shaded areas
- Spills and stains: Food, drink and other substances leave marks
- Wear and foot traffic: Regular use contributes to dirt accumulation
To maintain your patio, sweep regularly, remove debris promptly, allow surfaces to dry properly and consider using protective treatments where appropriate. Regular sweeping and scrubbing with suitable cleaning products helps prevent dirt accumulation. Allow the patio to dry thoroughly after cleaning to limit algae and moss growth. Remove spilt liquids and food debris immediately to prevent permanent stains.
