How often should you descale a Nespresso machine?

It is important to descale your Nespresso machine regularly for optimal taste and machine longevity. With daily use, we recommend descaling every 3 months. HG offers excellent solutions, including HG coffee machine descaler for cleaning the capsule holder and outlet pipe, plus HG Nespresso® descaler for safe and effective descaling. Other options include a mixture of water and white vinegar, citric acid dissolved in water, or lemon juice mixed with water. However, take care with these household alternatives, as results can vary and unwanted effects may occur.

HG solutions for descaling your Nespresso machine

It is important to descale your Nespresso machine regularly for optimal taste and machine longevity. Fortunately, HG offers excellent solutions:

  • Use HG coffee machine descaler to clean the capsule holder and outlet pipe of coffee residue and grease. Simply insert a cleaning capsule, press the large cup button, wait 60 seconds and rinse with two large cups of water.
  • Descale your Nespresso machine safely and effectively with HG Nespresso® descaler. This biodegradable descaler, based on lactic acid, provides 4–5 descaling treatments and works quickly and odour-free.

Solutions for descaling your Nespresso machine

Regular descaling of your Nespresso machine is essential to maintain your coffee quality and appliance lifespan. While professional descalers are available, you can also use some household alternatives. Please note that these solutions are not always equally effective and may carry potential risks. Here are some suggestions:

  • Use a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. Run this mixture through the machine, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Dissolve citric acid in water, using approximately 2 tablespoons per litre, and run this solution through the machine. Afterwards, rinse well with clean water.
  • Make a mixture of water and lemon juice, using approximately 1/4 cup lemon juice per litre of water, and use this to descale the machine. Do not forget to rinse with clean water afterwards.

While these solutions can help descale your Nespresso machine, HG recommends taking care. Results can vary and unwanted effects may occur. If in doubt, it is always best to use a purpose-designed descaler specifically formulated for your Nespresso machine.

Causes of limescale build-up in Nespresso machines

It is important to descale your Nespresso machine regularly for these reasons:

  • Hard water: If you live in an area with hard water, limescale will build up faster in your machine. This is because hard water has a high concentration of minerals such as calcium and magnesium.
  • Frequent use: The more often you use your Nespresso machine, the faster limescale will accumulate. With daily use, we recommend descaling every 3 months.
  • Lack of regular maintenance: If you do not descale your machine regularly, limescale will build up and eventually affect your machine's performance and lifespan.
  • Using ordinary water: Using tap water instead of filtered water can also contribute to limescale build-up, as tap water often contains more minerals.

To prevent limescale build-up, we recommend descaling your Nespresso machine regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions. For this, preferably use Nespresso's special descalers or a mixture of water and white vinegar. In addition, you may consider using filtered water to reduce limescale formation. Regular maintenance will ensure your machine continues to produce excellent coffee while extending its operational lifespan significantly.
